Dutch Boy Lessons in Painting

One manufacturer's advertisement and painting book entitled Dutch Boy Lessons in Painting, published by National Lead Company, New York and Boston, ca. 1910. This promotional booklet for Dutch Boy white lead paint is 14 unnumbered pages in length. The front cover is a chromolithograph of the "Dutch Boy", seated and admiring his small paintings. The back cover is also illustrated with an image of the Dutch Boy, and the lower two thirds of the cover contains a related advertising rhyme. A message about how to use this booklet entitled "To the Children" is printed on the inside of the front cover. A message "to the house owner" is printed on the inside of the back cover. The book is comprised of 8 pages of outline illustrations for painting, and 3 leaves of watercolor paints (6 colors to a page) for use in painting the illustrations. Below each image are a few lines of promotional text. None of the images have been colored in, and the paints have not been used.

The "Blue Boy" by Gainsborough
Rare Books
Small printed flyer describing Thomas Gainsborough's portrait "Blue Boy." Probably designed to be handed out to the public or posted during one of the painting's frequent public exhibitions at the British Institution or the Royal Academy throughout the 19th century. Typographic style indicates that it was printed some time in the 1870s. The painting was sold to Henry E. Huntington in November 1921. Prior to its departure to California, "Blue Boy" was put on display in the National Gallery in London in January 1922.
