It was prepared by Charbisse and Prefontene, egineers to King XV. It includes details regarding: geology of the area; locks and bridges to be built; access roads; canal embankments; construction materials needed; removal of houses; aqueducts to be built; and finally, the total cost of the project.

A bound volume containing 90 full page manuscript maps in pen and ink with later pencil notes, with a few overlays and a map of land at Cathill by W. Stephens. The volume is made up of the initial survey, with plans, the properties and their owners, costs, rents, and tolls done by the chief engineer William Pitt; this covers the whole route including the extensions and the Lords Hayes Branch Canal. This survey was intended to provide the information necessary to design and fund a canal as well as getting the canal passed by Parliament. The Wyrley & Essington Canal (known as The Curly Wyrley) was built in the 1790s following an Act authorizing a canal from Wolverhampton to the collieries at Wyrley Band and Essington. The volume is bound in half straight-grained black morocco gilt with a leather title piece to upper board, recently repaired.
