    G. Nelson Allen letters

    These 12 letters, all written to Allen's daughter Emma Merrit, are handwritten copies of the original letters (location of originals is unknown). The majority of the letters are actually written by both G. Nelson Allen and Elizabeth Allen. In the letters they discuss their lives in Ohio and Wisconsin as well as their decision to go to Colorado to try their luck there. While on the journey to Colorado, G. Nelson and Elizabeth discuss the trail, its conditions, the weather and landscape, the other emigrants they pass, the loss of their dog Beppie, and the Native Americans with whom they interact, more specifically the Pawnee. The letters are written from Fort Des Moines, Cass County and Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Fort Kearny, Nebraska. In the letter dated 1887, Elizabeth Allen reminiscences about their trip across the plains. In one letter (1858), G. Nelson reminiscences about living on the Gila River, near Tucson, Arizona and Fort Yuma. Included are transcripts of the letters.

    L.S. from Horatio Nelson to the Prinicipal Officers & Commissioners of His Majestys Navy regarding wages due various sailors. The letter was written by a secretary and only signed by Nelson; written aboard the H.M.S. Boreas at the Nore.

    Mostly letters from Nelson to William Locker, Lady Hamilton, Prince William Henry, and others reflect Nelson's career from 1777, particularly the Baltic Expedition, the Battle of Copenhagen, and the Battle of Trafalgar; various minor encounters between British and enemy warships; Prince William Henry, later King William IV and his naval activities; family and personal affairs, especially in connection with Lady Hamilton.

    This small group consists of three photographs, one letter, and two military records related to the Stiefel family from 1862-1918. HM 83912 (a): Reinhard Stiefel's appointment as 5th Corporal of Company E of the 6th Regiment of Minnesota Volunteer and discharge as Sergeant, 1862-1865. HM 83912 (b): photograph of Reinhard Stiefel in his sergeant's uniform, approximately 1864. HM 83912 (c): photograph of Stiefel family and other passengers on or near the "Rubio" incline car at the Echo Mountain station in Los Angeles County, California, 1913. HM 83912 (d): photograph of Armistice Day celebration on Nicollet Street and 7th Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 11, 1918. HM 83912 (e): letter from a World War I Canadian soldier in France with the initials L.A.C. to Florence Fried of Toronto, Ontario. In the letter, they thank Fried for a care package received in a field hospital, December 25, 1918.
