    Anonymous manuscript treatise on pneumatics, air balloons, geology, mines and coal

    The manuscript was written by an unknown author who was probably a male student in England in the 1840s (he mentions an article in a 1837 magazine on ballooning). In it, the author writes generally on several different topics including: pneumatics, air balloons, geology, mines and Sir Humphry Davy, and coal. It contains many hand-drawn diagrams and illustrations (some in color). The volume has many blank pages.

    Tractatus physica universalis: manuscript

    This handwritten manuscript seems to be a fair copy of a complete course of lectures on algebra, and other scientific topics such as physics and astronomy, given by Guido Grandi in 1705. It contains several hand-drawn illustrations.

    Camille Desmoulins manuscript fragment about the freedom of the press

    A fragment from a longer manuscript, possibly from Le Vieux Cordelier, number seven; the two-page autograph manuscript concerns the freedom of the press. In the upper left corner is the number 13 and directly below is an autograph note in another hand dated 1865; the two pages are heavily corrected and lined through, though the text remains legible on both pages. The accompanying material, all in French, includes a catalogue description, a partial transcription, and further information about the sale of the manuscript.

    A compendium treatise in medicine

    This manuscript, which is written in Turkish by Abubakir Nuşrat, was probably written in 1650 in Turkey (the volume also has some writing from the early 20th century in it). The volume is a treatise about medicine but also deals with astrology. It has charts and some hand-drawn illustrations.

    Most of the manuscripts in this collection came from Sotheby's 1936 Portsmouth sale of Newton's papers. They include correspondence, research notes, and documents, over 30 of which are in Newton's hand. The collection demonstrates the wide range of Newton's activities: his extensive studies of alchemy and theology, his work for the Royal Mint and the Royal Society, as well as his personal records. Highlights include: "A Treatise or Remarks on Solomon's Temple," with commentary and six sketches of plans and architectural details drawn by Newton, "Praxis," considered one of his most important alchemical manuscripts, and an illustrated alchemical text picturing the Philosopher's Stone. Another notable manuscript is "Lib. Chem," Newton's inventory of over 100 alchemical books in his personal library, with shelf marks.
