    Page proofs of essay by Hermann von Helmholtz originally written in 1887; the essay discusses the topic of the electrolysis of water that he had initially explored in his 1883 essay, On the Thermodynamics of Chemical Processes. The typescript is in German, with corrections and emendations by the author in German and marginal annotations by an unidentified person in English. One annotation in English is signed by an unidentified editor at the publisher, Taylor & Francis.

    An extensively annotated extra-illustrated work in two volumes: a chemist's working copy of a significant treatise on the development of chemical procedures of dyeing textiles. Volume 1 contains 544 pages with 39 textile samples; volume 2 contains 646 pages with one folded engraving, illustrations, and 34 textile samples. Both volumes contain annotations on separate sheets, with some intertextual annotations as well. In addition, there are twelve cloth samples of indigo dyeing, with detailed manuscript notes on the samples, which are unique to this copy of the work by Schützenberger. The volumes are bound with contemporary calf spines, marbled paper boards; there is some foxing and slight staining on a small number of pages.

Black letter, with italics on title page and for headings, and roman type for other headings and closing prayer. In two parts, with separate foliation, register is continuous.

Copied from a map printed in John Ogilby's "Description of the New World, "London 1670. Descriptive text in left and right margins of sheet. James Laurie was a Scottish geographer and chief editor of "A system of universal geography," Edinburgh, 1842. He should not be confused with James Laurie (1811-1875), the American engineer and one of the founders of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
