  Photograph album of China, Korea, and Japan

  A photograph album containing 263 photographs of China, Korea, and Japan, dating from the time of the Boxer Uprising in China to the Russo-Japanese War, 1901 to 1905. The photographs are primarily unique images, along with some commercial photographs and foldout panoramas, and many have handwritten captions. The album's inside cover is inscribed: "John Rory Macey / H.M.S. Blenheim / China Station / Vol. II / Jan 1st 1901 - July 18th, 1905"; Macey was a naval engineer in the British Admiralty and most likely took some of the photographs, particularly naval-related scenes, and images of British servicemen. Photographic subjects in China include navy ships in the port of Weihaiwei, street scenes in Peking (Beijing) and other cities, Chinese residents, monuments (including the Forbidden Palace under foreign occupation), palaces, gardens, and temples. A number of photographs focus on the aftermath of the Boxer Uprising, including ruined buildings. The second portion of the album depicts scenes in Korea during the Russo-Japanese War; these include Korean people in daily activities, street scenes, commercial images of Chemulpo, and the palace grounds in Seoul. The third portion of the album contains amateur and commercial photographs of Japan, including the port cities of Maizuru and Yokohama, Japanese residents, tea ceremonies, the hot spring resort of Tonosawa, and panoramic images of the Osaka Exhibition of 1903. At the back of the album are 17 large, hand-colored photographs of Japan, including images of landscapes, street vendors, and Japanese women in genre scenes.

  Includes 1 photograph album containing 39 photographs depicting post-World War I scenes including buildings in ruins; a British dugout; coal mining machinery in Lens; a British Officers' rest house in Germany; soldiers and men, women, and children on streets in France and Brussels, Belgium; a post office in the Netherlands; and several images of Bailleul, including the destroyed Hotel de Ville. The loose photograph is an aerial image of an unidentified location by the United States Navy (1917).

  Toshio Anzai photograph albums

  Two photograph albums of approximately 400 black-and-white photographs taken by Major Toshio Anzai of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), during a training visit to the United States from August 1954 to January 1955. Anzai and two other JSDF personnel are seen training in medical rescue with the U.S. Army; socializing with American officers and their families at their homes; and sightseeing across the southern United States and Mexico. The photographs have captions written in English and Japanese, with more detailed descriptions and observations written in Japanese. The albums document the personal and professional interactions between Japanese and American military personnel during the Cold War alliance.

  Photograph album of U.S. Army Air Service aerial photographs of the Philippines, South China Sea and California

  Visual Materials

  An album of mostly aerial photographs taken during the 1920s by the U.S. Army Air Service, 15th Photographic Section above the Philippines and South China Sea, as well as Northern California, and some in New York. In addition to aerial views, there are images of planes flying in formation, airfields, dirigibles, and ships. Some Philippines locations photographed include Cagayan Valley, Magat River, Nueva Vizcaya, and Jolo, as well as images of U.S. Navy ships and aircraft stationed at the islands. Northern California aerial images include Yosemite, San Francisco, and Lake Tahoe. The 15th Photographic Section soldiers and personnel are seen in three group photographs listing their names, 1929 and 1930.

  Series II. Photograph albums

  This collection contains approximately 1520 photographs in 11 volumes, comprising four journal accounts written by Walter Savage Wright from 1899-1901 and 7 photograph albums compiled by Walter S. Wright and his son, Howard Walter Wright. The journal accounts contain approximately 210 photographs and the photograph albums approximately 1310 photographs, dating from approximately 1878-1930, chiefly 1896-1917. The photographers are chiefly unidentified, though it is assumed that most were taken by members of the Wright family, chiefly Walter S. Wright and Howard Walter Wright; some photographs were taken by commercial photographers. The journal accounts concern the Wrights' family life in Pasadena; Walter S. Wright's journeys to Sonora, Mexico, with business partners to secure a railroad concession for the Los Pintos Mines; and a cruise taken by the Wright family to the Channel Islands in 1899, so that son Howard W. Wright could engage in bird collecting and photography. The photograph albums depict the Wrights' life and residence in Pasadena; the family's travels to Mount Wilson in the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Catalina Island, and other areas of California; trips to the Channel Islands, Mexico, and other destinations; Howard W. Wright's years as a student at Stanford University (1911-1915) and his tours in Japan, China, and the Philippines during his service in the Navy during World War I.
